UK GOV Circular Economy Strategy

The UK Government's Circular Economy Strategy is set to be published this autumn with a huge focus on reducing waste and promoting the reuse of materials in order to drive economic growth and meet net-zero-targets.

As most UK businesses and residents are aware, this is something that is desperately needed; The UK has the second highest level of e-waste per person in the world, and the UK's material footprint is double the sustainable limit identified by the UN.

The UK Governments Circular Economy Strategy could aid the UK in reversing its consumption habits, but also bring a £25 billion boost to the UK economy by only 2035 according to MPs backed by organisations including Green Alliance, IMEA and Zero Waste Scotland.

The upcoming strategy could also help to reduce inequalities where 'right to repair' is concerned, making the ability to remanufacture both easier, more accessible and cost-effective; manufacturers are obliged to inform consumers about their rights to repair and provide timely and cost-effective repair services.

Currently, the premature disposal of goods across the EU produces over 261 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions, consumes over 30 million tonnes of resources and generates a whopping 35 million tonnes of waste each year according to the European Commission. Consumers also lose roughly £12 billion a year by replacing goods rather than repairing them, which a new strategy would look to fix, estimating a £4.8 billion growth.
